Etching is a chemical removal of surface material, usually from lemon juice, vinegar, wine, or a household cleaner that is not stone-safe. Because it removes material rather than adding a stain, wiping it will never help. It is corrected by grinding the surface back down to a uniform level and re-polishing, which is exactly what professional restoration does. Your kitchen does not need new stone.

That is the goal, and it is why we match finish level before we start. If only one section is restored at a higher gloss than the rest, it will be obvious in raking light. In most cases we restore an entire countertop, floor, or room rather than a single tile so the finish is consistent throughout.

Coastal properties typically need it sooner than inland homes. Humidity and salt degrade a penetrating sealer over time, and once it fails, spills move into the stone quickly. A simple test is to place a few drops of water on the surface — if it darkens the stone or soaks in rather than beading, the sealer is due.
